History of Printing in Our Country
The birth of printing in the Ottoman period
The first printing house of the Ottoman Empire was established in Istanbul in 1493 by the Spanish immigrants David and Samuel Ibn Nahmias brothers. The first book, Arba'ah Turim by Jacob ben Asher, was published on 13 December 1493.[7] After this attempt, printing houses were opened in Thessaloniki, Edirne and İzmir, and the works were printed mainly on religious subjects in Hebrew, Greek, Spanish and Latin.[8] It was forbidden to print works in Turkish and Arabic languages in the printing house.[9] It was the Sonsino family, who came to Istanbul via Italy in 1530 and settled in Istanbul in 1530, who brought innovations such as italic type, page layout, foil marking technique, and capitalization of the head of the text to the art of printing.[10]
Apkar Tıbir established the first Armenian printing house in the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century. Although Apkar Tıbir had his first Armenian hymn book published in Venice, he decided to move the printing house to Istanbul. Apkar Tıbir established the first Armenian printing house in 1567 in the courtyard of the Surp Nigoğayos Church in Istanbul with the printing equipment he brought from Italy.[11] Apkar was arrested when he returned to Istanbul with printing materials from Venice, and was released after the investigation made against him, as no criminal elements were found. In the fire that broke out, the printing house burned down along with the church.[9]
The first printing house established by the Greeks in the Ottoman Empire was established in 1627 by a priest named Nicodimus Metaxas.[12] The first work printed by this printing house is the book called “Little Treatise Against the Jews” (Court traite les Juifs). However, this printing house was destroyed upon the provocation of the Jesuits by the Janissaries. The point to be noted here is that this movement was not against the printing press, but as a result of the provocations of the Jesuits.[13] Despite being acquitted at the end of the trial, Metaxax left the Ottoman lands by taking the remaining printing tools.[14]
İbrahim Müteferrika established the first Turkish printing house on 16 December 1727. The first Turkish book published was Vankul.
